UN Women urges unity toprevent electoral violence
United Nations Women in Malawi has advised women representatives in Mangochi District to collaborate with various stakeholders to protect them from violence during campaign period.
The appeal came on Tuesday during a capacity-building session with women’s movement groups and key stakeholders to address violence against women ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.
UN Women programme specialist for gender and governance Victor Maulidi emphasised the need for united efforts in advancing women’s rights during the election season.
He said: “We are working with various women because they play a critical role as change agents in their communities.
“We urge them to collaborate with local and religious leaders, political representatives and the police, so that they are not alone in confronting violence against women candidates.”
In her remarks, Mangochi District Council principal gender development officer Mariana Kanjirawaya said her office is working with partners to shield women from gender-based violence (GBV).

“Women are facing different forms of violence during this campaign period, including use of harsh words to discourage them from participating in politics,” she said.
Kanjirawaya encouraged women leaders to engage other stakeholders in the district on the importance of reporting such incidents.
Mangochi District Peace Women Movement chairperson Deborah Julio Phiri thanked UN Women Malawi for the session, saying it will promote peace during the campaign period.
“UN Women has reminded us that we are not alone,” she said.
